Abstract

Abstract
Both women's employment and family sustainability are among important and challenging issues in sociology. The investigation of these challenges in our society is mostly focused on the women's employment consequences for family. Though the studies on this issue are extensive, the investigation of women's employment consequences on the family is still considered a current social issue.
In the present thesis, we seek to answer this question: How and to what extent does the growth of women's employment in the public arena affect the performance and balance of actors in the private arena of the family and its sustainability?
Using the mixed methodology and data alignment scheme, this research has simultaneously benefited both from quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative part was conducted based on the causal-comparative method and using a researcher-made questionnaire in a sample of 256 people including two groups of married working women and married housewives in Mashhad in 2016. In the qualitative part, data was gathered using grounded theory and through the in-depth interviews with 25 married women with different occupational groups.
Key words: Women employment, Family sustainability, mixed approach, Role theory, Power in the family
