The present study, employing the qualitative method of documentary content analysis with a descriptive-analytical approach grounded in Sylvia Walby's six-fold theory of patriarchy, examines European travelogues from the Safavid era. The central problem concerns how power relations and gender inequalities in women's lives during this period can be reflected upon and analyzed. The findings demonstrate that all six of Walby's patriarchal structures (household production relations, paid work, the patriarchal state, male violence, patriarchal relations in sexuality, and patriarchal cultural institutions) are traceable in various aspects of women's lives, including clothing, employment, permanent and temporary marriage, divorce, prostitution, superstitious beliefs, restrictions on mobility, and adornment. These structures interact reciprocally, reproducing male hegemony and leading to systematic discrimination against women. The results indicate that Walby's theory, despite its Western origins, provides an effective framework for the historical analysis of gender oppression in the context of Safavid Iran.
