Mahmoud Ostad-Mohammad is a prominent Iranian writer and one of the playwrights of the Theater Workshop, a group consisting of avant-garde theater artists in pre-revolution Iran. In his plays, and in plays written by his peers, the role of women is challenging. When Ostad-Mohammad began writing plays, few women were practicing theater and the dominant discourse of pre-revolution Iranian theater was that of men. But during the past 40 years and regarding the changes in social-cultural sphere, in addition to having more women practicing theater, their role in the plays has also undergone some changes. The present study aims to examine the role of women in plays by Ostad-Mohammad using the principal concepts in Critical Discourse Analysis, and in particular, Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis. In his works, we gradually see the presence of more women and more talking about their issues and problems. However, the question is to what extent this change of approach reflects the change in the ruling ideology and the transformation of power relations, and to what extent it is influenced by previous ideologies.
